  • Recently, as my wife was expressing her opinion about a parenting matter I thought I knew where she was headed so I jumped in. Except I was wrong which frustrated her and side-tracked the conversation. Hey, we all do it. We make assumptions that short- circuit the communication. So what do we do? First, be humble enough to admit that you can't read minds or hearts. Then, be quick to listen and slow to speak just as James 1:19 says. Listen openly and check your assumptions at the door.

Ron: Most of us assume we’re good listeners.

Announcer: For FamilyLife Blended®, here’s Ron Deal.

Ron: Now, here’s what’s ironic. Making the assumption that we’re a good listener actually makes us a bad listener. I did this to my wife just the other day. She was telling me her opinion about a parenting matter and I thought I knew where she was headed so I jumped in. Except I was wrong which just frustrated my wife and side-tracked the conversation. Hey, we all do it in every relationship. We make assumptions that short- circuit the communication.

So what do we do? Well first, be humble enough to admit that you can’t read minds…or hearts. And then, be quick to listen and slow to speak just as James 1:19 says. Listen openly and check your assumptions at the door. For FamilyLife Blended, I’m Ron Deal.
